Two of the better teams in the WIVC and arguably in the area will meet Friday night in Greenfield as the Tiger, 3-1, host the West Central Cougars, 4-0. West Central remains the only undefeated team in the WIVC South, while both Carrollton and Greenfield are both 3-1. the other three teams in the division are Calhoun, Pleasant Hill and North Greene, all 0-4.
Game time is 7:30 instead of the usual 7 p.m. start time.
West Central set up the game by remaining undefeated Friday night at home vs. Pleasant Hill.
Lathan Barnett and Ryan Moore each scored three touchdowns, and West Central beat Pleasant Hill 48-8 in football Sept. 17 at Winchester.
The Cougars (4-0) play Greenfield-Northwestern (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Palmyra. West Central was ranked No. 9 in last week’s Associated Press Class 1A State rankings. Greenfield-Northwestern was ranked No. 12.
West Central needed just two plays to score after Lathan Barnett recovered a Pleasant Hill fumble at the 33-yard line.
Barnett had an 18-yard of the first play, but the Cougars followed with two consecutive penalties. Moore caught a 29-yard pass from Tyson Brown for a touchdown with 10:25 remaining in the first quarter. Barnett ran for the conversion, and West Central led 8-0.
Pleasant Hill drove to the West Central 19-yard before turning the ball over on downs. The Wolves had a fourth down on the drive, but the punter had a 21-yard that gave Pleasant Hill a first down.
Barnett scored on a 76-yard run on the Cougars’ first play. Chance Little ran for the conversion.
Brown intercepted a pass on Pleasant Hill’s ensuing possession, and West Central needed just three plays to move 79 yards and score.
Moore had an 8-yard run, and Barnett had a 13-yard run. Moore scored on a 58-yard run, and with 50.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Brown ran for the conversion to extend the margin to 24-0.
Moore scored on a 25-yard run, and Barnett scored on a 22-yard run in the second quarter. Barnett ran for the conversion after both touchdowns, and the Cougars led 40-0 at halftime.
Barnett returned the opening kickoff of the second half 78 yards for a touchdown. Landon Barnett caught a pass from Brown for the conversion.
Pleasant Hill broke the shutout when JT Walston scored on an 11-yard run with 4:22 remained in the game. Carter Dolbeare ran for the conversion.
The Wolves had 252 yards of total offense and had 15 first downs in the game. They rushed for 225 yards on 47 attempts.
West Central gained 321 yards of offense and finished with 12 first downs. The Cougars had 273 yards rushing on 23 attempts.
Lathan Barnett rushed for 139 yards on seven attempts, and Moore rushed for 102 yards on four attempts. Little rushed for 17 yards on four attempts. Conner Turner rushed for nine yards on two attempts.
Brown completed three of five passes for 48 yards. Moore caught one pass for 29 yards, and Parker Hoots caught one pass for 16 yards. Landon Barnett caught one pass for three yards.
Mason Berry had 11 tackles to lead the defense. Moore had eight tackles, including two for losses, and Lathan Barnett had eight tackles and recovered a fumble. Brown had six tackles and intercepted a pass.
