Shirley Lee Browning, nee McDonald, 91, of Chatham, IL, passed away Saturday, September 25,2021. Shirley was born in Girard, IL, May 1, 1930.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, C. John Browning, her parents, Leland and Mary McDonald, and her sister, Betty Jean McCord. Shirley and John were married in Chatham, June 19, 1949.
Shirley is survived by her children, Kirk (Linda) Browning of Clarksville,TN, Mark (Paula) Browning of Crete, IL, Beth (Ron) Littich of Jefferson City, MO, and Lesa (David) Hemming of Springfield, IL. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Christopher (Alyssa) Browning of McKinney, TX, Benjamin (Meredith) Browning of Waukegan, IL, Heather (Patrick) VanZyl of Crete,IL, Kristen (Brandon) Reynolds of Leroy, IL, Aaron (Rachelle) Littich of Wentzville, MO, Adam (Kari) Littich of Creve Coeur, MO, Justin (Steffani) Hemming of Jeffersontown, KY, and Nathan (Kristen Olson) Hemming of Spokane, WA. 15 great-grandchildren also survive Shirley, Taylor, Ethan and Corinne Browning, Zoe, Delia, Oliver, Huck and Linus Van Zyl, Levi Reynolds, Noah and Isaiah Littich, Alexander Littich, David and Darcy Hemming, and Nora Olson. Shirley is survived by her sister Peggy Jo (David) Sharp of Newport News, VA and brother Chuck (Rose) McDonald of Glenarm, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley graduated from Ball Township High School. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Loving her family was her greatest passion. Mom loved Jesus her whole life and always had a servant’s heart. She taught children’s Sunday School for years, sang in choirs and sang duets at many funerals and weddings. Now her beautiful alto voice is singing with the angels. Shirley worked side by side with John for 39 years on the farm and throughout the rest of their lives. Her smile could light up any room and she loved tucking anyone she met under her wings, blessing and loving on them.
Cremation rites were accorded and a private memorial service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chambersburg Christian Church.
