Greenfield-Northwestern scored with 1:04 remaining in the game and beat West Central 36-30 in football Sept. 24 at Palmyra.
The Cougars (4-1, 2-1) will play at North Greene (0-5, 0-3) Friday at 7 p.m. Pleasant Hill beat the Spartans last week.
The Tigers forced West Central to turn the ball over on downs at the 50-yard line with 4:07 remaining in the game. Sam Walker scored on a 9-yard run to give Greenfield-Northwestern the lead. Brady Pembrook ran for the conversion to extend the margin to six points.
Greenfield-Northwestern forced another turnover on downs and was able to run out the clock.
Lathan Barnett scored on a 21-yard run with 11:53 remaining in the game to tie the game at 28-all. Ryan Moore made a leaping catch from Tyson Brown for the conversion as the Cougars took a 30-28 lead.
It would stay that way until Walker scored with just over 1 minute remained.
Moore scored on a 57-yard run on West Central’s third play of the game. Barnett ran for the conversion, and West Central led 8-0 with 9:18 remained in the first quarter.
Landon Barnett caught a short pass from Brown and scored on a 6-yard play as he dived into the end zone. The conversion was no good, and
West Central led 14-0 with 10:01 remained in the second quarter.
Walker scored on a 7-yard run and ran for the conversion to cut the margin to 14-8 with 5:49 remained in the first half.
West Central drove to the 4-yard line late in the second quarter. A pass was incomplete on first down, and run was stopped after a short gain as time ran out in the first half.
Walker scored on runs of 11, 50 and 23 yards in the third quarter.
Moore scored on a 55-yard run with 8:46 remaining in the third quarter. Parker Hoots caught a pass from Brown that gave West Central a 22-14 lead.
Walker scored just 19 seconds later to tie the game and his third touchdown of the quarter gave Greenfield-Northwestern a 28-22 lead.
Greenfield-Northwestern gained 333 yards of offense and finished with 17 first downs in the game. It rushed for 274 yards on 41 attempts.
Walker rushed for 222 yards on 26 attempts.
The Cougars, who were ranked No. 4 in last week’s Class 1A poll, gained 404 yards of offense had 16 first downs. They rushed for 357 yards on 47 attempts.
Moore rushed for 252 yards on 21 attempts. Lathan Barnett rushed for 107 yards on 21 attempts.
Brown completed six of 12 passes for 47 yards. Moore caught two passes for 23 yards, and Lathan Barnett caught passes for 15 yards. Landon Barnett caught one pass for six yards, and Hoots caught one pass for three yards.
Mason Berry had seven tackles and recovered a fumble for the defense. Chance Little had seven tackles.
