The Jerseyville City Council OK’d an Illinois Department of Transportation resolution to close State Highway 67 Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the Veteran’s Day Parade.
The parade will line up at Wells Norris Tire Service and move towards West Prairie Street and then toward State Street (Highway 67) at the divide.
The parade will then go to E. Exchange Street then head south on Washington Street then proceed to Pearl Street and the parade will then land in front of the U.S. Post office. When everyone has arrived and settled in, the ceremony will begin.
“In past years, the ceremony has taken place at 9 a.m., but in an effort to finish around 11 a.m., organizers sought to have it at 10 a.m.,” Greg Brenden, Commission Coordinator for the Jersey County Veterans Assistance, said. “The armistice back in World War 2 was assigned Nov. 11 on the 11th hour. That is why we are trying to get close to the 11th hour of wrapping up the ceremony. Hopefully, (the 10 a.m. start) will be a continued tradition,” he said.
The Veteran’s Day event in Jerseyville is a collaboration between multiple veterans’ organizations including the local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4528, the Marine Corps League and the Veteran’s Assistance Commission.
“At the ceremony, the Jersey Community High School Band is set to perform two songs,” Breden said. “I will be the master of ceremonies, for the event, and our main speaker at the ceremony will be Tom Mollory from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4528. The ceremony will end with the playing of the Taps and a 21 gun salute.”
If it should rain or there is snow accumulation, the event will not be at the court house, there will be no parade, and the ceremony will be held under the big pavilion outside at the legion, which is near the fairgrounds. For those interested in participating in the parade, they should call Breden at 618-498-1810.
