A very beautiful weekend and many people are enjoying the drive up the Great River Road to see all the gorgeous fall colors. All the eating establishments in the county. as well as the roadside markets, were very busy. Today through Wednesday temperatures remain in the upper 60’s and sunny. Thank you Lord!
I drove to Wright City, MO last Monday and spent several days with my daughter and son-in-law Shelly and Dennis Scherer, also two of my great grandchildren Noah and Addy Keppler who were there for the week. The children’s mother, Ashley, and two of her close friends from work flew to New York City and spent a most enjoyable week. They visited all the main attractions, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, 911 Memorial, a play on Broadway “Lion King”, Central Park and much, much more. With the children not having school on Monday and Tuesday, we all had an enjoyable time as well.
On Saturday afternoon the daughters of Sara Heffington hosted an 80th birthday celebration for her at the Riverdock in Hardin. A delicious Taco Bar buffet, complete with veggie and fruit trays and various desserts was enjoyed by her many family and friends in attendance. Even an Elvis Impersonator from Collinsville stopped by and sang to her. Among those attending from South Calhoun were Vera and Pat Droege, Marcy Klockenkemper, Christine Johnes and myself. Thanks to everyone for a wonderful afternoon. Many more “happy and healthy” birthdays Sara!
Kelley Heffington of Golden Eagle accompanied her son, Brady Ellis, to Las Vegas last weekend. The occasion was Brady’s 23rd birthday. They had a most enjoyable time and lots of memories were made.
The Brussels High School Class of 1981 held their 40th reunion on Saturday evening at “The Drifters” in Grafton with 14 of the classmates, and their spouses, in attendance. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food and beverages but most of all the time spent together. Present were Kathy (Hattemar) Friedel, Debbie (Wieneke) Kuhn, Audrey Nolte, Carol (Stepanek)Drainer, Linda (Nolte) Held, Susan(Kinder) Kennedy, Jeff Kinder, John Ohlendorf, David Pohlman, Rick Eberlin, Eric Friedel, John Carnes, Duane Sievers and Mike Held. The class had a short meeting and decided to meet each year, as well as choose a project to benefit an organization each time. The one chose for the coming year is the Calhoun County Search and Rescue Team, under the supervision of their classmate David Pohlman. A bank account is being set up at the Bank of Kampsville for the classmates or anyone wishing to donate to this project. Sounds like it was a great evening and many ideas coming out of the meeting.
Audrey Nolte of Troy, IL attended her 40 yr. class reunion on Saturday night and afterwards spent the remainder of the weekend with her parents Bob and Anita Nolte in Brussels.
John Carnes also attended the class reunion and afterwards was an overnight guest of his mother Carol Sue Carnes, while Julie Carnes spent the night with her dad Francis Toppmeyer. On Sunday morning we attended church and after lunch worked outdoors cleaning up several flower beds, getting farm equipment winterized, etc. until darkness quickly set in due to the time change. Many thanks John for all your help and I know Francis appreciated Julie’s work as well.
On Sunday a group from the county enjoyed a Fall Color Ride through Calhoun and up to Naples, IL. There they enjoyed a delicious meal at Evandy’s Boatel on the Illinois River. Spending the day together were Evan and Dee Eberlin, Lonn Grandia, Ben and Barb Hanneken, Jason and Brandi Wieneke, Charlie Casey, Rick Hagen and Danny Hermann. The foliage is at peak time so I know the colors are beautiful!
I had a phone call yesterday from Kim Devine pertaining to an article on the bridal shower of Allison Vollmer the week before. She wanted me to mention Judy Peer, Godmother of Mitchell Devine hosted the shower and that she was not co-host. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Kim.

Veterans Day Prayer
Lord God Almighty, We thank You for the land we live in, and especially for those who have served our country in its defense. Through their sacrifice You have defended and guarded this land from many dangers. You have sustained our nation in the past and continue to bless us. We recall how so many have given their lives for the cause of freedom. Today we pause to reflect and honor those who gave or who continue to sacrifice so much to defend our freedom. Amen
