The seventh grade Lady Cougars advanced to the Championship game of the St. John’s tournament on Friday evening taking on the St. John’s Lady Redbirds for first place in the tournament. At the end of the evening, they took home second place, falling to the Lady Redbirds 28-27.
The Lady Cougars had a comfortable lead throughout the game until, until the fourth quarter that is. The Lady Redbirds battled back and with just 1:47 left in the game, pulled ahead of the Lady Cougars 25-24.
From that point on, for the next few minutes, the lead would change hands several times. With 49.5 seconds left in the game, the Lady Redbirds were ahead 27-26.
At this point, the Lady Cougars began fouling the Lady Redbirds to get the ball back. It seemed like a good plan since the Lady Redbirds hadn’t hit but maybe one free-throw all night. They managed to dunk one more free-throw on the night and West Central returned the favor, but the clock ran out with the final score 28-27 and the St. John’s Lady Redbirds pulling out a stunning victory over West Central to take home the first place trophy in their own tournament.
