The seventh grade St. John’s Lady Redbirds kept their fans on the edges of their seats last Friday evening during the championship game of the St. John’s Tournament.
Trailing the West Central Lady Cougars for the entire game the Lady Redbirds turned up the heat in the last two minutes of the game to pull ahead of the Lady Cougars and bring home the Championship trophy by defeating West Central 28-27.
St. John’s lulled West Central into a false sense of security by allowing them to command comfortable lead throughout the game most of the game. But in the bottom of the fourth quarter The Lady Redbirds found their rhythm battling back and with just 1:47 left in the game, pulled ahead of the Lady Cougars 25-24.
From that point on, the lead would change hands several times, mostly through free-throws. With 49.5 seconds left in the game, the Lady Redbirds were ahead 27-26.
At this point, the Lady Cougars began fouling the Lady Redbirds to get the ball back. It seemed like a good plan since the Lady Redbirds had trouble at the free-throw line for most of the night. However, they managed to dunk one more free-throw which West Central countered with one of their own. The second free-throw didn’t go in and St. John’s got the ball back, running the clock out and securing the win, 28-27 and claiming the championship title.
