The Bell of Calhoun is arguably the most prominent of the sternwheel packet boats that played an important part in the social and economic life of Calhoun citizens of yesteryear. In fact, one might say that it’s right on up there with the apple and peach in being symbolic of the county itself. This explains why the Calhoun County Historical Society is happy to have recently been donated a shaving mirror that came out of one of the cabins on the Belle. The piece was donated by August Beer and the Hampton Lammy family and will grace the museum floor for locals and visitors alike to see and learn about. The Calhoun County Historical Society is a non-profit organization that preserves the genealogical records and artifacts of the county. Located across the street from the Post Office in Hardin, it is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pictured above, the shaving mirror rests on the case which preserves a replica of the Belle.(Connor Ashlock/Calhoun News-Herald)
