A cold, windy Thanksgiving, but that did not stop everyone from enjoying the day with their family. It was so nice to be able to get together this year after COVID prevented it last year. We all have so much to be thankful for, not only on Thanksgiving, but every day in the year. Each day let us be reminded to thank God for all He continues to provide.
John and Julie Carnes, Lydia and Caleb hosted Thanksgiving Dinner in Edwardsville on Thursday. Joining them were Trevor and Cyndi Axford, MacKenzie, Madison and friend David Morrow of Chesterfield, Mo., and myself. So much delicious food to partake of, along with so many different and yummy desserts. We also enjoyed just being together for the day. Many thanks to the Carnes family for the wonderful meal and being able to spend time with them.
Dave and Kara Hagen, Emma, Ryan and Alessa of Meppen prepared Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday and brought it to the home of Roy and Barb Hagen where all the family gathered. Also present were Elaine and Lee Mans, Judy and Kenny Devening, Jan and Derrick Bick and all their families. What a wonderful day together!
Pat and Vera Droege hosted Thanksgiving dinner at St. Joseph’s Hall in Meppen with many family members in attendance. So much delicious food, followed by a wonderful afternoon of visiting.
George and Yvonne Baecht spent Thanksgiving Day with friends Donnie and Rosa Bennett in O’Fallon, Mo. These two couples have been friends for many years, going back to when the Bennett family lived in Golden Eagle and Donnie’s father taught school.
Marie Held returned home on Saturday after spending four days with her daughter Barb Ward in Decatur. Her grandson, Eric Held, drove her up there on Tuesday before he headed to Nashville, Tenn., on another bus tour of a celebrity. On Thanksgiving, she and Barb enjoyed dinner with Barb’s son and family, Patrick and Rachel Ward, Henry and Lucy in Mount Zion, Ill. Also present were Rachael’s parents, James and Cathy Sapp.
Bob and Bonnie Held accompanied their daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Rae Payne of Bloomington to Wisconsin on Monday. There they spent Thanksgiving week at the Payne’s beautiful home by the lake. They were also joined by Kyle and Kris Hagen of Alton, with everyone returning home on Saturday.
George and Yvonne Baecht hosted their family Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. Present were Keith and Becky Baecht, Matthew and Samuel of Jerseyville and Danieland Leann Baecht and Conner of Springfield, Mo. Delicious turkey and all the trimmings were enjoyed by everyone.
John and Caleb Carnes of Edwardsville spent Saturday with me. They got all the roses cut back (10 of them) and mulched for the winter, more leaf raking, and then after lunch put up all my Christmas decorations inside and out. Really appreciated all their help. After supper, they visited with Francis Toppmeyer and took him meals John had prepared for the week ahead. I know Francis enjoys that, and so do I. Many thanks once again! With winter approaching, we will miss their weekly visits and help.
The Red Hatters of Calhoun will be holding their Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Old Fill-In Restaurant in Batchtown beginning at 11a.m. Everyone attending, please bring a White Elephant wrapped gift; in other words, something you don’t use anymore, but someone else might like. Reservations need to be made by Dec. 6 by calling either Christine Johnes at 618-396-2239, or Irene Wallendorf at 618-396-2429.
Many thanks to the Calhoun High School Lady Warriors and their helpers for the delicious Community Turkey and Ham Dinners they delivered to the elderly, as well as widows and widowers, on Saturday. What a thoughtful and wonderful gesture by this group. Thanks also to those who delivered it.
The community was saddened to learn on Saturday of the passing of Ida Snyder of Brussels. Visitation was on Tuesday evening at the Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Brussels. Funeral mass at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church. Ida was preceded in death by her husband Ed and son Paul. Surviving are her daughters JoAnn (Donnie) Bieker and Joan (Gary) Titus and their families, all of Golden Eagle and Bernice Snyder of Brussels.
Also deepest sympathy to the family of David Kinder, son of Dorothy Kinder (and the late Edgar), who passed away recently.

Prayer for Advent
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever faithful to your promises and ever close to your Church: the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior’s coming and looks forward with longing to His return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which His presence will bestow, for He is Lord forever and ever. Amen
