The Thirteenth Annual Jersey Lady Panther Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament kicked off Monday night with only five teams taking part this year – Jersey, Carrollton, Taylorville, Triad and Gateway Legacy.

Arch Rivals Carrollton and Jerseyville met up Monday night in first round action in what looked like was going to be a runaway game for Carrollton but turned out to be exciting in the fourth quarter with Carrollton taking home the win 48-36.

Carrollton came out of the gate red hot outscoring the Lady Panthers 15-2. The Lady Hawks had four players put points on the board in this quarter. Callie McAdams hit a 3-pointer, Graci Albrecht had a basket and a free-throw for 3 points, Haley Schnelten had a 3-pointer and a basket for 5 points and Lauren Flowers added 4 points. Kari Krueger scored the only points for Jersey.

The Lady Panthers came back in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Hawks 9-8. This time it was the Lady Panthers who had four players contribute to the scoring drive. Cate Breden added 3 on a 3-point shot and Bria Tuttle, Avery Reeder and Tessa Crawford each added two. Crawford’s two were on free-throws. In fact, 12 of her 15 points on the night were from free-throws. Furthermore, 22 of the Lady Panther’s 36 points came from free-throws.

The Lady Hawks took a comfortable 23-11 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the third quarter, Carrollton’s Paige Henson was on fire. Henson came in in the second quarter and scored four points, but in the third quarter she scored 11 of the Lady Hawks 13 points in the quarter with the other 2 coming from Lauren Flowers.

Jersey once again outscored the Lady Hawks in the third quarter scoring 14 points, all but 5 of them coming from free throws. Crawford had a three-pointer and Maggie Gorman scored 2. In the free throw department, Tuttle scored 3, Breden, 2 and Elise Noble, 2.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers fought their way back and pulled to within 8. Crawford went 8 for 8 at the free throw line but Tuttle was only 1 for 5 from charity stripe. Noble added 2 more free-throws for a total of 11 free-throws in the fourth for the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Panthers shot 73 percent from the free-throw making 22 out of 30 attempts while making only six field goals on the night – two of them three-point shots for a total of 14 points.

High scorer for the Lady Panthers was Crawford with 15, followed by Tuttle with 6, Breden with 5, Noble with 4 and Krueger, Reeder and Gorman with 2 each.
The Lady Hawks had five players score in the fourth quarter for a total of 12 points. Schnelten came back in the game and scored 3, Callie McAdams added 4 on two field goals, Lauren Walker added a pair of free throws, Albrecht had a field goal and Flowers went 1 for 4 from the free throw line.

The Lady Hawks made 10 of 16 from the free throw line for 62 percent but had 18 field goals on the night, two of which were 3-point shots.
High scorer on the night for the Lady Hawks was Henson with 15, followed by McAdams and Flowers with 9 each, Schnelten with 8, Albrecht with 5 and Walker with 2.
