Charles Wayne Harshman, age 89 of Pittsfield, IL passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2022 at the Illini Hospital in Pittsfield, IL. He was born in rural Pittsfield on July 11, 1932 to Loren Kendrick and Mabel C. Moyer Harshman. Wayne married Annabelle Luster on Dec. 20,
1950 at the Buckhorn Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 2020.
Wayne graduated from Pittsfield High School and went on to drive a truck for several different companies including Gerard Brothers, Art Crowder Trucking and Ray Crabtree. He then was a Mobil gas distributor for several years and also worked on a crew that help build the I-72 interstate. Wayne finished his working career at Central Stone as a scale Master retiring after 18 years. Wayne liked hunting and fishing and enjoyed the many fishing trips he and Annabelle took with family and friends. In earlier years he enjoyed playing cards, trail rides, golf, get- togethers with friends and the neighborhood cookouts. He loved his garden and would always share his produce with the neighbors. In his later years Wayne took up woodworking, gifting his crafts to his family. Wayne could be stubborn and hard headed but he would give you the shirt off his back. He was a past member of the Old Orchard Country Club, Moose Lodge, Pike Promenaders and the Pittsfield Dance Club.
Wayne is survived by one son, Gary Harshman of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Sandra (Gale) Bess of Newburgh, IN; grandchildren, Amy (Jeff) Van de Ryt of Clarksville, TN, Russell (Lindsay) Harshman of Myrtle Beach, SC, Johnathon Allen, St. Charles, MO, Keri (Kevin) Peterson, Gulfport, MS, Ashley (Cameron) Hollen of Evansville, IN, Gale (Renee) Bess, Jr. of Evansville, IN, Brittany (Max) Monroe of Evansville, IN, Crystal (Ryan) Molohon, of Auburn, IL, and David Bess of Hattiesburg, MS; fifteen great grandchildren; one brother Harold Harshman of Caledonia, MI; one sister Mary Moore of Orlando, FL and numerous nieces and nephews survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Annabelle, three brothers, Stuart, Dale, and Howard Harshman; one sister Helen Crowder.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, IL. Interment followed at the Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the “Clubfoot Cares”. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
