Free comic book day festival at the library
Last year, the Jerseyville Public Library (JPL) was packed full of comic book characters in all shapes and sizes at their well attended inaugural Free Comic Book Day Fest (FCBDF).
This year, comic book and superhero lovers of all ages are invited to attend the second annual FCBDF at the library on Saturday, May 7, from 12 to 3 p.m. Registration is required by calling the library at 618-498-9514.
All ages who attend will receive a free Comic Book courtesy of Diamond Comics with titles ranging from Archie to Avatar and Sonic to Spiderman, just to mention a few.
One of the highlights of this year’s event includes a visit by a caricaturist from St. Louis who will be present between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. The first 30 people to sign up while registering for the event will receive a caricature of themselves as a superhero. Due to the time it takes for the caricaturist to draw the participant, there is a limit of 30 people for this part of the festival.
Gamers are encouraged to register for the Smash Bros. Tournament which begins at 1 p.m. All tournament participants must pre-register by calling the JPL no later than the day before the festival in order to play. First prize is a new Nintendo Switch video game.
Another new event this year is the Step By Step Superhero Draw-Along with Brandon Hayes, a local artist. There will be several sessions where kids can pick up a clipboard and a pencil and Brandon will lead them in drawing a superhero character to take home.
Also new this year are hands-on activities: Make a Superhero Mask and Design Your Own Superhero.
The event will once again include face painting (multiple artists will be on hand) and a photo booth area with superhero related props to pose with while taking your own photos.
Costumes are not required, but they are encouraged and everyone is welcome to participate in the Costume Contest at 2:30 p.m. for a chance to win Jersey County Business Association (JCBA) gift certificates which will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Those in attendance at the end of the event at 3 p.m. will have the chance to win one of several door prizes.
Registration is open now. Call the Jerseyville Public Library at 618-498-9514 with any questions or for more information.
