The Jersey Community Unit School District (JCUSD) is holding a summer book drive for kindergarten through fifth grade students. With the addition of the new American Reading Curriculum, JCUSD is using the drive as an added incentive for children to read during the summer months, according to Kate Sievers, JCUSD curriculum director.
The new curriculum has fostered JCUSD students’ love of reading for enjoyment, not simply because it was assigned, Sievers noted.
“We’re trying to be a proponent for reading and to promote the joy of reading,” said Sievers. “We’ve found our kids are reading so much more outside of school.”
Those interested in donating books for the drive can drop them off at any school building in the Jersey district, or they can take them to Purple Daisy at their new location on 109 N. State Street.
Purple Daisy owner Catrina Groves has a child in the district, as well another who graduated, so when she heard about the book drive, she felt compelled to join in on the mission.
“I saw the promotion was going on, and I thought it would be an important thing to get involved with,” said Purple Daisy Owner Catrina Groves. “These are our kids we’re talking about. When we help out our schools, we help out our teachers, which helps our kids grow.”
Groves involvement adds another location for people to drop off books to make things simpler, according to her.
“Instead of having to drop off the books at the school, I thought, why not make it easier and provide another place for people to drop them off and go on their way,” said Groves.
Groves added that she will be creating a box that will be placed at her shop for people to place their donated books. Purple Daisy reopened last Saturday, after being closed for several days so they could move into their new location.
Everyone who drops off a book donation at Purple Daisy will receive a free pair of Druzy earrings. Additionally, they will be entered into a raffle to win a hat from one of the shop’s vendors.
The book drive runs until Wednesday, May 13, with the goal of gifting each JCUSD student, from kindergarten to fifth grade, with a free book to take home at the end of the year.
