Beautiful warm days in Calhoun County. The Open House at St. Vincent DePaul Society was very special and was a day that was long awaited. A Blessing of the facility was conducted to a nice crowd at 11 a.m. by Fr. Don Roberts of the Catholic Churches of Calhoun County. A Catholic Charities representative from the Springfield Diocese was also present. Robin Hillen, Food and Clothing Pantry Manager; Brad Vacca, St. Vincent DePaul President; Nicki Franke, Vice President; Kathy Rogers, Secretary; and Betty Eilerman, Treasurer, were some of the St. Vincent DePaul Board Members present. There were dignitaries from the County, Rita Hagen County Clerk; Terry Woelfel, County Commissioner; and many other residents from the county, and visiting counties who serve as donors, volunteers, and contacts that help out as needed with projects that require volunteers and donors. It was a day that marked the beginning of the St. Vincent DePaul Society for years to come.
The Batchtown community is saddened by the passing of Arlene Brodbeck age 76. Arlene was the wife of Jim Brodbeck and he survives. Arlene has two sons, Jimmy (Laura), and Chad (Amanda); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a brother, Barry (Petyana) Webster. A son, Patrick, preceded her in death. Her parents, Harry and Bessie Webster, also preceded her in death.
Arlene was a happy housewife, and Arlene and Jim enjoyed all aspects of farm life. Arlene enjoyed cooking, baking and running the house, and garden. She was an active member of The Church of Christ, and was a member of the Batchtown Woman’s Club and participated in their programs and events with her long time friends in the community that she loved. She was a good wife and mother and a good friend to many. She will be remembered always in the community and with the family she loved. Our prayers go out to Arlene’s family. Her visitation is Friday, starting at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral with burial at Wilson’s Cemetery in Batchtown.

The night has a thousand eyes,
The day but one,
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.
The mind has a thousand eyes,
And the heart but one,
Yet the light of a whole life dies
When its love is done.
