Seems our weather has transitioned back to spring. Temperatures over the weekend were in the low to mid 60s. I’m certainly not complaining! We did have about two inches of rain last Friday and Saturday and, before that, the farmers were in the field until dark to get finished planting their crops. Memorial Day weekend seems to be a great one with temperatures in mid to upper 80s.
Jeff and Kathy Carey; Hannah; Taylor; Kevin and friend, Holly Kinder, have just returned from a wonderful vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama. On Saturday, May 14, they joined Jeff’s family for a few days together. While there, they spent most of their time on the beach. In the evenings they rode go karts, played mini golf, spent time in the escape room and shopped. Kevin especially enjoyed fishing. I understand they even got brave and enjoyed new foods like shark and gator jerky. Sounds like they all had a most enjoyable time down south for the week.
Sharon McLeod of Billings, Montana and her mother, Marie Held of Brussels, spent a couple days last week visiting with another of Marie’s daughters, Barb Ward, in Decatur. On Thursday evening, they were joined by Barb’s son and family Patrick and Rachel Ward, Henry and Lucy of Mount Zion. They all enjoyed a great meal and visit that evening. The past weekend was a great one for the Golden Eagle Youth Trap Team in Sparta. This group took home a lot of medals and trophies. The Singles Trap Winners were first place intermediate team: Carson Sievers, Walker Sibley, Ian Gilman, Levi Schulte and Madalyn Nolte (who by the way got 49 out of 50). Also first place senior, winner Kyle Robeen, 2nd place Senior Steven Margherio and second place ladies Senior was Hope Smith. Third place ladies rookies Quinn Sievers and third place intermediate Walker Sibley. Also, many winners in the Skeet and Sporting Clays. Mighty proud of all of them and their coaches.
On Saturday, visitors and dinner guests of Marie Held and her daughter Sharon McLeod were Jim and Sharon Held of Alton, Barb Ward of Decatur and Bob and Bonnie Held of Brussels. The Held Family enjoyed a delicious dinner and then spent a wonderful time together catching up since Sharon was here last.
The Pre-K Class of Brussels graduated on Wednesday morning. Afterwards they spent an enjoyable time outdoors with their teacher Amy Friedel. Many parents and grandparents attended the graduation.

Their graduation ceremony will be on Friday evening, May 27. Best wishes to all of them for continued success in the years ahead.
On Sunday, my visitors and farm workers were John and Caleb Carnes of Edwardsville. I fed them a good lunch and dinner in hopes they will continue to come back to help me. Many thanks to both of them!
Happy Birthday to Leonard J. Fortschneider of Brussels, who celebrated his 70th Birthday on Sunday, May 22 with lunch at Mel’s Riverdock Restaurant in Hardin, followed by cake and ice cream with his wife Joyce, daughters Emily Fortschneider of Brussels, Natalie and husband Kyle Wiener and sons Kody and Lucas of Jerseyville, and son Hank Fortschneider and fiancee Ashleigh Clendenny of Brussels. Then, he was tricked into going to the Old Point Pub in Brussels, where he was surprised with a party with his sisters Margie Carnes and Mary Jo (and Bob) Kress and their families, along with many other family members and friends. Many more “happy ones” Leonard!

With Memorial Day coming up this weekend my prayer is for May 30.
Lord God, On this Memorial Day we pause to reflect upon our blessings as a nation and the high cost of those blessings. Hear our prayer for those who put the welfare of others ahead of their own and give us hearts as generous as theirs. We pray that the sacrifices of our fallen will forever be remembered. Amen
