The Calhoun High School Lady Warriors softball team had a successful end to their season which concluded this week.
After dominating the Regional Championship against the Lincolnwood Lancers, 5-0, last Monday, the Warriors went on to the Marissa Sectionals where they defeated the Okawville Rockets, 10-3, last Tuesday, May 24.
Calhoun went on to face the Marissa Coulterville Meteors in the final game of the Sectional tournament on Saturday, May 28, where the Warriors reigned victorious, 2-1.
In the first inning, the Warriors secured the lead, scoring one run, while the Meteors went scoreless. Inning two was uneventful for both teams and the score remained 1-0, Warriors.
The third inning proved more fruitful for Marissa, as they scored one run in the top of the inning, tying the game, 1-1. The Warriors went scoreless in the bottom of the inning, but the Meteors’ luck ran out in the subsequent innings, unable to secure any more runs.
Calhoun suffered a dry spell in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, securing their 2-1 win over the Meteors.
A. Gilman pitched the entirety of the game for Calhoun, striking out 12 batters and walking two. She also scored one of the team’s two runs. G. Middendorf pitched for Marissa/Coulterville, striking out seven batters and walking none. Four Calhoun batters got hits against Middendorf, while three Marissa/Coulterville batters got hits against Gilman.
The other Lady Warrior to score was L. Simon and E. Sievers and K. Angel were the other batters to get hits. G. Zimmer managed the only run for the Meteors.
The Warriors moved on to the Supersectionals held at the University of Illinois ball diamonds in Springfield on Monday, May 30. Calhoun faced defeat at the hands of the Illini Bluffs Tigers, 12-4.
Calhoun softball finished their season with an impressive overall win-loss record of 25-10 and a conference win-loss record of 8-1. They had an 11-3 win-loss record at home, an 8-6 win-loss record away, and a 6-1 win-loss record in neutral games. Additionally, the team boasted a four-win streak this season.
