Pittsfield High School offered a cheer camp for cheerleaders around the area, July 10-12. Schools participating were, Pittsfield, Pleasant Hill, Western and Liberty.
“We had instructors come from Xperience Chicago and teach us skills, and drills,” Ashley Bradley, PHS cheer coach, said. “It is so expensive to go to camp with travel, lodging, meals, etc.”
The camp at Pittsfield allowed local cheer coaches to drive their squads to camp each day and experience the camp atmosphere.
“The closest camps are in Chicago or St. Louis, making it cost prohibitive and impractical for some squads,” Bradley said. “This was the first camp Liberty has been able to attend in 17 years.”
Bradley said the coaches from Xperience were great for the squads attending.
“Not only did they work with the cheer leading skills such as tumbling, stunts, jumps but, they talked about teamwork, positivity, sportsmanship, empowerment,” said Bradley. “They encouraged the girls to take what they learned at the camp and keep growing.”
Bradley said the camp was activity based and kept the girls together, giving squads a chance to develop as a squad and as individuals. Leadership was a big part of the camp.
Bradley said she and the other cheer coaches would like to make the event annual.
