The Calhoun Community Foundation is giving the village of Brussels a night to remember on Sunday, Aug. 21. The musical, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” sponsored by TOURCO and WerQfest, will be hosting its adaptation of William Shakespeare’s famous play at Brussels Heritage park.
The play is a comedy that was composed around 1595. Set in Athens, Greece, it consists of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Greek mythological figures Theseus and Hippolyta. Other subplots of the play involve a conflict among four Athenian lovers while another follows a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play which they are to perform before the wedding. Both groups in these subplots find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who try to manipulate the humans. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and is widely performed across the world. First premiering in 1605.
The event tours all throughout Illinois and Missouri this month, beginning in St Louis on Aug 2.
Theater artist, Tre’von Griffith, leads the cast of six performers in a highly musical 90-minute afro-futurist adaptation of Shakespeare’s 500-year-old piece. The event runs from 6:30-9 p.m. and is free to the public with no reservations required.
