Even though the scuttlebutt has been floating around town for more than a month, it can be officially announced now that Winchester Grade School Principal Andy Stumpf has been hired as the Assistant Principal for the Greenfield School District.
The hiring took place at the Sept. 19 regular meeting of the school board when board members approved the contract between Stumpf and the district, though Stumpf’s duties with the district will not begin until July of 2023 due to his current obligations with the Winchester School District.
Stumpf, who lives in Carrollton, has been with the Winchester District as their grade school principal for the past seven years and is in the last year of his contract.
Greenfield is looking to replace Dr. Kevin Bowman, who left the district this year. The district is currently operating under Interim Superintendent Dr. William Phillips.
Stumpf doesn’t currently have his Superintendent’s license, but is in the process of obtaining it, which is why he was hired as an assistant superintendent.
“I will have to be the assistant superintendent until I’m certified and then I will take over as superintendent,” Stumpf said. “We were waiting to see if Winchester would let me out of my contract early or not because they were hoping I could start earlier.”
Stumpf said he is currently taking the classes needed to get his certification to become a superintendent and will be finished with those classes in December of 2023.
For now, however, he will continue to be Winchester Grade School Principal until June 30, 2023 when his contract expires. On July 1, 2023, he will become the interim superintendent at Greenfield for approximately six months until he receives his certification and operate under Dr. William Phillips.
Stumpf said he had heard Dr. Bowman had left the district and had several people urge him to apply.
“I actually had several people reach out to me asking me if I had any interest in the position and I had a few people push me to apply, but since I wasn’t officially certified yet, I didn’t really consider it,” Stumpf said. “But, I talked to a couple more people and they said I should just throw my name in the hat and I ended up applying. Later on in the process I interviewed and was ultimately offered a contract.”
Stumpf is a 2000 graduate of Carrollton High School and a 2004 graduate of Monmouth College. His teaching career started in 2005 at Carrollton teaching nine years before receiving his principal’s certificate in December of 2013.
He took over as Principal at Brussels in July of 2014 and then moved to the position at Winchester in 2017. As of this year, he has spent nine years teaching and nine years in the administrative field.
Stumpf said he can’t wait to start this next chapter of his life.
“Obviously I’ve lived close to Greenfield and been around Greenfield my whole life and I know all the people and we all share a great rivalry in this county,” he said. “I have a great appreciation for the traditions they have there and the big things they do there both academically and athletically and I’m just looking forward to being a part of it. They are a great school district.”
