Maxine ‘Pete’ Whittaker | 89 | Jacksonville

Maxine ‘Pete’ Whittaker, age 89, of Jacksonville, IL and formerly of Perry, IL passed away on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022 at Stone Bridge Memory Care in Jacksonville. She was born on June 13, 1933 in Jerseyville, IL to Elmer and Opal Snider Shelden. She married Harvey “Shad” B. Whittaker on June 18, 1955 in Perry, IL and he preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2018.
Maxine grew up travelling with her family while her father and his siblings worked in the construction business throughout the United States. They were all very close knit and she lovingly received her nickname ‘Pete’ from her Shelden cousins because they referred to her as ‘Pistol Pete.’ She graduated high school in Oregon, MO and went on to attend Illinois College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. She later earned her Master’s Degree from Western Illinois University. Maxine worked as an Academic Advisor for John Wood Community College for 25 years. She was a past member and President of Perry School Board, past member of Perry PTA, and past member of the Perry Pioneer Day Committee as well as chairperson for its Fish Fry. She and her husband, Harvey, were past honored citizens for Perry Pioneer Days. Maxine was a member of the Old Orchard Country Club and enjoyed playing golf and she also enjoyed gardening, reading, and puzzle books. She traveled the world visiting places like Europe, Russia, and Australia with Ken Bradbury’s group. Maxine earned her small plane pilot license, was a certified scuba diver, and jumped once as a sky diver. She lived quite an interesting and accomplished life and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Janet) Whittaker of Lexington, IL, Steve Whittaker of Perry, IL, Robin (Tom) Wainman of Pittsfield, IL and Susie (Brian) Drake of Jacksonville, IL; grandchildren, Jeremy (Morgan Westfall) Johnson, Jessica (Jason) Todd, Mallory Wainman, Jacob Whittaker, Shannon Whittaker, Haley Whittaker, Laura Whittaker, Neva Whittaker, Ashley Drake, and Riley Drake; great grandchildren, Zoey Whittaker, Isaac Todd, Natalie Todd, Elizabeth Todd, Kamden Wainman, Trenton Wainman, Jonas Wainman, Ada Wainman, Aamilya Wainman, Silas Wainman, Ezra Johnson, and Eliza Johnson; and extended family, Angie Marie Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Harvey Whittaker; parents, Elmer Shelden and Opal Sheldon Knecht; and son, Shelden Whittaker.
Per her request, no services will be held and cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials are suggested to be made to Shriners Hospital. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
