Still having changeable weather, only in the upper 30s all last week and lows in the 20s and also lots of wind. Now, for this week, 50+ degrees which sounds really great. Lots of people are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend so they are most appreciative of this.
On Tuesday evening, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which sponsors the food (and clothing) pantry in Hardin, hosted a wonderful dinner at the Rastello Room in Hardin. Over 50 were in attendance, including board members, volunteers and spouses. The delicious meal was catered by Kim and Denny Vogel and assisted by their daughter Emma, with fried chicken from the Fill Inn, along with baked ham and all the trimmings. Thanks to the Vogel’s for catering this great meal.
Brad Vacca, President of the Board, gave a welcoming address and told of the many wonderful things the society has done for the people of Calhoun. Mike Hagen responded and also thanked all the volunteers that help each week. Meal blessing was given by Father Roberts. After dinner, everyone enjoyed the social hour.
The Brussels Woman’s Club met on Thursday afternoon at St. Matthew Hall with six members present. We welcomed Mary Kirn to the club for the coming year. Member Dana Kirkpatrick presented the new club books for 2023 for which we thank her for the great job she did. Many items on the agenda for the coming year were discussed.
I presented the program on Education and also announced that St. Mary’s School, Brussels Grade School and Brussels High School had each received their annual donation of $100 from the club. Also on the list for $100 donations are the South Calhoun Ambulance, St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and the St. Louis Food Bank that supplies the Food Pantry with food each week.
Hostess for the meeting was Jean Barton, and she served a delicious pumpkin spice cake, along with various flavored coffee’s purchased earlier this year from Door County in Wisconsin.
The December meeting will be a luncheon and gift exchange at the Wittmond Hotel on Friday, Dec. 30, at 11:30 a.m. When the time gets closer, please let Judy Burch know you are attending as she will be making the reservations for our club.
Congratulations to Pat and Sharon Friedel who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last weekend with their family. Many more happy and healthy ones to you both!
Francis Toppmeyer of Golden Eagle and his children, Julie Carnes, of Edwardsville; Jane Mandernach, of Marthasville, Mo.; Mark Toppmeyer; and Lisa Heffington and her hubby, of Godfrey, drove to Branson, Mo. last Sunday. They had rented a condo for four days and enjoyed sightseeing, shopping and of course attending five musical shows while there. Francis especially enjoyed his favorite Irish Tenor, Danny O’Donnell and even got to meet him after the show. Sounds like everyone had a great time and Francis really enjoyed this early Christmas gift from his family.
Many thanks to the Sophomores and Juniors of Brussels High School who presented a Mystery Play and dinner on Saturday evening at the gym. Many attended and enjoyed the delicious meal, as well as the show that followed.
Wyatt and Gracie Pohlman of O’Fallon, Mo. spent the weekend with their grandparents Paul and Mary Lou Goetze in Meppen. Their parents, Paul and Ann Marie Pohlman, celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on Saturday evening. Many more happy anniversaries to them!
Saturday evening I enjoyed my neighbor, Barb Hagen, coming to visit. We also watched a movie during the evening. A really great visit, we need to do this again real soon. It sure makes the long evenings go by a lot faster!
Patti Rose of Brussels attended her sister, Phyllis Sloan’s, 80th Birthday celebration on Saturday. The event was hosted by her four daughters and held at the Alton-Godfrey Sportsman Club. Approximately 60 family members and friends were in attendance. Phyllis resides in O’Fallon, Mo. With the passing of Phillip “Sonny” Roach, Phyllis’ twin brother, in December of 2020 he was greatly missed.

Prayer for Thanksgiving
Dear Lord, there is so much we have in life for which we cannot pay, the things we take for granted in our journey day by day. From early in the morning until the day is done, we ought to count our blessings and name them one by one. Health, peace, happiness, love of family and friends, birds, trees, flowers, a list that never ends. Each season brings something different and we accept what comes our way. We need to stop and think a bit of what we have and why, like even the stars, the moon and the sky. The very air we breathe each day, the food on our table, roof over our head, clothes on our back, etc. There is a world of things to give thanks for, but most of all, I thank You, Lord, for the salvation that is mine in Christ, in whose name I pray. Amen
