The Calhoun Warriors boys varsity basketball team played an away non-tournament game against the Roxana Shells on Monday, with it being the first game of the season. The Warriors hoped to get out to a commanding start in the first quarter, but found themselves trailing 19-4 after the first. Such a large point deficit would prove disadvantageous for the Warrior’s, despite their best efforts. As the second quarter began, things looked promising for the Warriors, who scored more points than the Shells. The second quarter tally for both teams was 10-9 in favor of the Warriors. The score stood at 29-14 heading into half time.
Second half play began in the third quarter shortly after, with the Warriors yet again taking the offensive initiative. Out scoring the Shells 12-10. However, the large lead created by the Shells in the first quarter was too big to overcome for the Warriors. The fourth quarter saw the Shells manage 19 points to the Warriors 15. Bringing the final score to 57-41, Shells. Despite this loss, the Warriors showed signs of brilliance following the first quarter. Top performers for the Warriors were: Chase Ralston with points 12, Chase Caselton with 10, Conner Longnecker with eight, and Landon Sievers with seven. Sievers managed the only three-pointer of the game for the Warriors.
A partial reasoning for the loss could be attributed to the number of fouls the Warriors incurred, with 16, compared to the Shells, who only had six. Nonetheless, the Warrior’s look to claim the next game and lock down their first win of the season against the 1-3 Southwestern Piasa Birds. The game will be at home this Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.
