The third annual Calhoun County Turkey Trot 5K was held Sunday, Nov. 27, starting and finishing at the William Horman Memorial Park in Hardin. The event consisted of a non-competitive 5K (roughly 3.1 miles) and a 1 mile fun run/walk.
This event was started in 2020 as a virtual event that participants could complete at any time from Thanksgiving through the holiday weekend. It was started as a way to get people out of the house and moving around while still keeping them safe during the pandemic.
The Turkey Trot also served as a way to help organizations who were unable to fundraise during the COVID-19-related restrictions. The event was so well received that it has been held every year since.
This was the first year where participants had the option to participate in the 5K in-person or virtually. Participants were given the opportunity to select the community organization that their money would go towards. This year’s selection of organizations consisted of: Calhoun Community Swimming Pool, Weekend Power Pack, Warrior Fan Club, St. Norbert’s School, St. Mary’s School, Brussels Village Park, Jersey-Calhoun Jaycees and Christmas in Calhoun.
While the 5K was not a race, Lacey Pohlman was the first to cross the finish line.
Turkey Trot organizers Madison Bailey, Jae Brady and Danielle Hurley said, “It’s a great way to encourage fitness and exercise and community involvement while helping out for a great cause.”
Organizers added that Sunday morning’s rain put a bit of a damper on the crowd that had planned to attend in person, but overall there was good participation and they hope to see everyone participate in next year’s Turkey Trot.
