He was born in Pittsfield, Illinois on Jan. 8, 1934, the oldest child of John (Ernie) and Veda Stone DeSpain. He attended Griggsville High School and went on to serve our country from 1953 to 1955 having been drafted during the Korean War. He was in basic training when the colonel announced the armistice had been signed. Larry was very proud of his time spent overseas serving in the Army and enjoyed sharing his experience with his family and friends.
After his military service, Larry worked at Brown Shoe Company and M.D. King Milling Co. in Pittsfield.  He later moved with his young family to Blandinsville, Illinois working at M.D. King Milling Co.’s new facility. Larry worked a short time at LaHarpe FS but ended his career as Facility Manager for United Feeds (formerly known as M.D. King Milling Co.) in Blandinsville. Shortly after retirement, a tornado destroyed his home and he moved back to Pike County.
Larry was a salesman at heart, and he passed that ability on to his children and grandchildren. He.” He’ll be remembered as a jokester with an infectious laugh, highly independent, and an all-around genuine guy who loved his family fiercely. Larry enjoyed driving around town, watching St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball, Nascar races, playing Dominoes with his siblings, front porch sitting with his brother Ronnie and Sunday dinners with his sister Bobbi and her family. His greatest joy was watching his son’s sporting events and in later years his grandchildren’s games alongside Ronnie and his brother-in-law Homer.
Survivors include three sons, Gregory of Griggsville, Reginald of Blandinsville, and Patrick of Covington, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Lyndsey (Chuck) Binstead of Mackinaw, Derek (Cate) DeSpain of Baylis, Drew DeSpain and Lexi DeSpain both of Chambersburg, Tyler (Morgan) DeSpain of Pearl City, Hawaii, Jenna (Craig) Grummel of Carrollton, and Addison DeSpain of Blandinsville; a step-grandson, Chad (Tomomi) Borrowman of Chula Vista, California; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are siblings, Barbara (Wayne) Chenoweth of Chambersburg, Ronnie DeSpain of Pittsfield, Gary (Jean) DeSpain of Carlinville and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Homer Allen; and niece, Rhonda Wombles.
