The North Greene varsity basketball team kept fans on the edge of their seats with a dramatic last second overtime win over Pittsfield Friday night.
Reese Scott was fouled with just four seconds left on the clock in overtime. He missed the first shot but sank the second one to give the Spartans a 50-49 win over the Saukees.
The first quarter started out slow for both teams with North Greene putting just 6 points on the board to Pittsfield’s 9. The majority of Pittsfield’s points were scored by Nolan Daniel with 7 including two 3-pointers and a free throw with the other 2 coming from Brennan Tomhave. North Greene’s came from baskets from Scott, Jacob Hinsey and Luke Farris.
The second quarter saw more action with each team scoring 13 points. For North Greene, Farris and Colby Eilers scored 4 points each while Scott scored another basket for 2 and Garrett Hazelwonder got on the boards with a 3-pointer. North Greene took 22-19 deficit into the locker room at halftime.
Pittsfield pulled away in the third quarter scoring 11 to North Greene’s 7 giving the Saukees a healthy 33-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.
But the Spartans came back with a vengeance scoring 19 points and holding Pittsfield to just 12 points. Freshman Luke Farris was on fire scoring 7 points to lead the scoring in the fourth. Hinsey and Scott each chipped in 5 points while Eilers and Hazelwonder rounded out the scoring with baskets.
The Saukees literally made a basket with mere seconds left to tie the score at 45 and send the game into overtime. North Greene was able to tie the game with seconds left in overtime when Scott was fouled and sent to the line.
His first throw bounced off the rim, but the second shot was nothing but net giving the Saukees 4 seconds to get the ball to the other end of the court. Needless to say, they were unsuccessful leading to an eruption of excitement from the North Greene fans.
Scoring was as follows: Scott, 14: Farris, 13; Hinsey, 9; Eilers, 6; Hazelwonder, 5 and Michael Rollins, 3.
