Brown County made seven three-point baskets and beat West Central 76-71, Jan. 14, in the fifth-place game of the Winchester Invitational Tournament.
Mason Berry made a three-point basket to give West Central a 7-4 in the first quarter. Brown County, however, scored the next seven points to take the lead. They never trailed again.
Brown County led 25-14 after the first quarter and 44-32 at halftime. The Hornets scored the first basket of the third quarter to extend its lead to 46-32.
Berry made a three-point basket, Chance Little grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, and Jaydon Howard scored to cut the deficit to 51-45 with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter. Brown County led 56-47 after three quarters and 58-47 early in the fourth quarter.
Zack Evans had a steal and scored converted a three-point play to get West Central within 64-59 with 3:55 remaining. Mason Berry scored as the Cougars got within 68-63, but West Central committed a turnover on its next possession.
Evans grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to get the Cougars within 74-71 with 16 seconds remaining. Brown County made two free throws to seal the win.
West Central was 12-for-16 from the free throw line in the game, but three of the misses came in the fourth quarter.
Evans, who was name to the all-tournament team, scored 25 points and had eight rebounds to lead West Central (15-6). Carson Brown scored 13 points, and Berry scored 12.
Howard scored 10 points and had 14 rebounds. Tyson Brown scored six points, and Chance Little scored five.
Evans scored 21 points to lead the Cougars to a 58-43 win over Greenfield-Northwestern Jan. 13 in the fifth-place bracket.
Greenfield-Northwestern led 12-11 before West Central scored nine straight points. Evans and Howard both scored, and Little scored five points. The Cougars led 20-12 after one quarter.
West Central led 24-14, but Greenfield-Northwestern cut the margin to 24-21. Evans scored, and Howard made one of two free throws as the Cougars extended the lead to 27-21 at halftime.
Tyson Brown and Ryker Ford made consecutive three-point baskets for a 42-27 lead. West Central led 44-34 after three quarters.
The Cougars led 47-38 before Tyson Brown made two free throws, and Carson Brown scored to extend the lead to 51-38 with 4:20 remaining in the game.
Howard scored 11 points, and Little scored nine points and had nine rebounds. Evans also had five rebounds.
Tyson Brown scored eight points, and Berry scored four. Ford scored three points, and Carson Brown scored two.
Griggsville-Perry made two free throws with 1 second remaining and held off West Central 52-49 Jan. 11 in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Carson Brown scored late in the third quarter to give West Central a 32-31 lead. Griggsville-Perry scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and never trailed again.
Tyson Brown made a three-point basket as West Central got within 43-42 with 2:14 remaining. Griggsville-Perry was able to extend its lead to 48-42.
Howard and Evans both scored as the Cougars got within 48-46. Griggsville-Perry made two free throws to extend the lead to 50-46.
Howard made a free throw, and Tyson Brown scored to cut the margin to 50-49 with 18 seconds remaining. West Central forced a turnover but missed a shot that would have given them the lead.
Griggsville-Perry made last second shots at the end of the first and second quarters and led 24-23 at halftime.
West Central shot just 35 percent (13-for-37) in the game but outrebounded Griggsville-Perry 36-7. The Cougars went 20-for-29 from the free throw line but were just six-for-11 in the fourth quarter.
Evans scored 15 points to lead West Central. Little scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds.
Howard scored eight points and had 14 rebounds. Carson Brown scored eight points, and Tyson Brown scored six points. Dalton Hutton scored two points.
