The Calhoun High School Warrior cheerleaders hosted “Take a Charge Against Cancer” night at the Calhoun Warrior basketball game on Friday night.
The cheerleaders encouraged everyone to make a sign showing their support for a loved one. They also threw out wristbands and T-shirts throughout the game as the Warrior pep band played.
The basketball players all sported their “Team Isabel” shirts, during warm-ups and after the game, in honor of Isabel McGlaughin. Isabel got to ring the bell after her final cancer treatment on Dec. 13. She took her final chemo pill on Dec. 22 with all of her cousins around her.
Isabel was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in 2021 when she was 8 years old. She has two first cousins who are Warrior athletes– basketball player Cade Sievers; and cheerleader Mary Pluester. They were very excited to have Isabel in attendance cheering them on.
In order to put into perspective how much cancer touches everyone, all 11 of Friday evening’s cheerleaders have a family member who is either battling cancer or has lost their battle with cancer. Two of the girls lost their fathers to cancer at a very early age.
The cheerleaders and Coach Lindsey Taul felt very strongly about this game to raise awareness to let anyone who is battling cancer know they are not alone. They have a whole team and a whole community behind them who will be cheering them on to victory.
It was a packed crowd, but unfortunately the Warriors fell to the number one ranked team, Routt, 72-45. Despite the loss, the spirit of the athletes at the game was an example of the district slogan, “It’s a great week to be a Warrior.”
