The Calhoun Warriors boys varsity basketball team played a home conference game against the Jacksonville Routt Catholic Rockets on Friday, Jan. 20. The game ended in an upsetting defeat for the Warriors who lost 70-45.
The precedent for the game was set in the first quarter as the Rockets scored 19 total points. The Warriors offense lagged behind, and only scored eight points. Down 11, and looking for some hint of a comeback, the Warriors began the second quarter and shrugged off their earlier hiccups. However, their hopes were soon squandered as the Rockets poured on an additional 13 points. They held the Warriors to just six.
At halftime the team regrouped, and re-entered the game with more offensive vigor. The Warriors scored 20 points in the third quarter, slightly out scoring the Rockets who managed 19.
Still, a comeback for the Warriors by the quarter’s end seemed unlikely as the score stood 51-34. In the fourth and final quarter, the Rockets closed the door on the game with 19 points, and kept the Warriors down with just 11. As the buzzer sounded to mark the game’s conclusion, the Warriors had lost by a 25 point margin.
Top scorers for the Warriors were Chase Ralston with 21 points and Conner Longnecker with 13 points. The Warriors are 5-14 as of writing. Their next match up will be a neutral tournament game against the Astoria Rebels on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 12 p.m.
