The Jersey Panthers boys’ varsity basketball team played a non-conference home game on Tuesday, Feb. 7, against the Carrollton Hawks. The Panthers would go on to beat the Hawks 76-57.
The Panthers made a great effort in the first quarter to strike, and strike hard they did, as they scored 20 plus points. The Hawks struggled to keep up. Two of the Hawks players played in knee braces during the game. Which more than likely kept them below max effort play. As the game drew on, the lead leaned heavily in the Panthers’ favor, who consistently managed to rip the ball out of the Hawk’s hands. Ball control was a contributing factor to the Hawks’ eventual loss.
At half time, the Panthers led by 20 points, but as the game crept into the late minutes of the third quarter, a momentum shift was on the horizon. It’s unknown exactly what sparked the Hawks’ attempted comeback, but we do know whatever it was nearly worked. As the fourth quarter began, the Hawks began to battle back. Scoring three consecutive times, the Hawks managed to drag the lead down to only ten points, and create a sense of unease in a largely quiet home crowd, which once roared with enthusiasm.
Aware of the impending embarrassment of a potentially blown lead, the Panthers came back once again, and scored several times. Yet, the Hawks seemingly answered right back with more points of their own. However, near the third minute mark of the fourth quarter, all hope of a comeback was dashed for the Hawks, who failed to keep control of the ball. The Panthers once again established a near 20 point lead, as they completely dominated the Hawks, who had seemingly run out of gas. The final score at the buzzer was 76-57. The Panthers held on, and now sit 14-13 as of writing.
Their next match up is an away conference game against the Waterloo Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
