Calhoun County’s annual spring cleaning campaign, Cash for Roadside Trash (CFRT), kicks off this week.
The CFRT program is sponsored by the Calhoun Community Foundation (CCF) and encourages civic-minded volunteers to get outside and remove litter that has been scattered along the county’s scenic highway and roadways. This annual event incentivizes individuals and groups to collect litter with a monetary reward.
According to Coordinator Judy Burch, the event has been a success for nearly a decade and she anticipates this year will be no different.
“This marks the ninth successful year the CFRT program has been offered,” said Burch, with over two tons of trash being removed from our roads and streets each Spring.”
The program pays $2 for each bag filled with litter and returned on the redeem day. Additional incentives include two $100 bonus prizes awarded to individuals or teams who collect the most bags. Two $50 bonus prizes will also be awarded.
Official CCF collection bags must be used by the participants and can be obtained in the lobbies of the Bank of Calhoun (Hardin and Brussels) and the lobbies of the Bank of Kampsville (Hardin, Brussels and Kampsville). Sign-in sheets for participants are also provided.
The CFRT redeem date is scheduled for Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Calhoun Highway Building, just south of Hardin, or in the St. Mary’s parking lot in Brussels. Participants should bring their filled bags to either location and collect their earnings. For further information, contact Judy Burch at 618-883-2223 or jhburch@frontiernet.net.
According to Burch, the CCF is “very proud to sponsor this positive project and are very grateful to all who participate in the beautification effort.”
Last year, CFRT participants cleared between 3,500 to 4,000 pounds of litter (133 trash bags worth). Each filled bag was estimated to weigh 25 to 30 pounds. The 2022 top collector was the Brussels Girl Scouts, filling 49 bags.
