University of Illinois Extension: Jersey County 4-H
“I pledge….my hands to larger service.” Engagement in service is a valued part of the Illinois Extension 4-H experience for thousands of youth each year and teaches valuable lessons. There is a tremendous need for service to support the physical and mental health of our communities, so we want to create opportunities in which 4-H clubs, members and community partners can provide those services.
4-H members are encouraged to develop and practice skills to become helpful or useful in their club, community, country and world. Community service projects are an opportunity for youth to develop a sense of pride and ownership for the community in which they live. Community service allows youth to learn the value of giving back to the community while working with adults and helping others at the same time. Through community service, young people build discipline, foster respect for others, promote civic responsibility, and practice in real world career-related experiences.
Every Spring, as part of True Leaders in Service and National Volunteer Appreciation, 4-H’ers put their pledge into action. National Day of Service challenges 4-H youth and volunteers to engage with their community, find a need, share support and provide a solution. Jersey County 4-H Youth Leadership Team is sponsoring a donation drive to benefit the Treehouse Wildlife Center. The center is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native wildlife while promoting environmental awareness through education. Donations are a vital part to sustaining the rehabilitation of the native wildlife in Jersey County. Youth, families, volunteers and community partners are welcome to drop off donations at the Jersey County Extension Office through April 30. For a list of donations visit the Treehouse Wildlife Center’s website or find a link on the Jersey County 4-H Facebook page.
