The Jersey County Board approved a recommendation from the Personnel Committee to add a new Lieutenant position within the Sheriff’s Department during Tuesday’s board meeting.
Sheriff Nick Manns said he was incredibly appreciative of the board’s approval as the need for supervisory roles within the department increases.
“The biggest issue for us now is we have so many new things, new training mandates, new laws on the books, so many new requirements for police officers. The more supervision I can get our officers the better,” Sheriff Manns said, adding that it’s his goal to keep Jersey as one of the top departments.
In other business, the board approved the Executive Director of the Illinois Valley Economic Development Corp.’s request to apply for the Non-Metro Public Transportation Grant and the Downstate Operator Assistance Program grant to provide public transportation in Greene, Jersey and Calhoun counties.
The board also approved a request from the University of Illinois Extension to renew their lease agreement as well as the extension council agreement.
During the committee reports, the board approved three motions from the Road and Bridge Committee. The first request was for a resolution for the anticipation of Township Bridge Funds for a bridge on Pleasant School Road in Richwood Township. The second motion was for a Preliminary Engineering Service Agreement to replace a pipe culvert on Old Fidelity Road. The final request for approval was for a Construction Engineering Service Agreement for a resurfacing project on Otterville Road.
A recommendation from the Tourism Committee was approved by the board to grant funding for three upcoming events. Funding was awarded for the Tri-County Antique Club’s 32nd Annual Olden Days Festival, Jersey County Street Machine’s Friday Night Cruise Night and the Village of Elsah’s Fall Festival. Chairman Gary Krueger noted that all three are returning events that have been successful in the past.
During the Building and Grounds Committee Report, the board approved to accept the lowest bid for landscaping around the courthouse, and a bid for carpet cleaning and floors being stripped and wax at the Administrative Building.
A motion for the purchase of additional cameras and monitors was also approved to enhance security at the courthouse.
Before adjournment, a representative from the Unified Child Advocacy Network spoke to the board during public comment, inviting the board and public to the upcoming open house at their new Jerseyville location on April 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 101 North State Street.
