John David Hillis | 83| White Hall
John David Hillis, 83, of White Hall, died Thursday, March 9, 2023, at his home with his devoted and loving wife by his side. He was born Dec. 15, 1939, in Berdan, the son of John and Opal Walker Hillis. He married Shirley Coates on June 22, 1958, at White Hall Pentecostal Church, and she survives.David is also survived by two children, Patricia Ann (Matt) Pingel of Cedar Hill, Missouri and David Gregory (Joan) Hillis of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Emily Hillis, Adam Hillis, Nicholas (Carla) Pingel, and Michael Pingel; and four great-grandchildren, Lily, Owen, Will, and August.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Sponslor.
David worked as an insurance agent in White Hall and surrounding communities for 42 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1962-64. As a high school student, he had worked at Dawdy Funeral Home in White Hall.
David enjoyed spending time at his cabin on the river where he enjoyed boating and fishing. He also had a great passion for hunting and playing his trumpet. He was a former American Legion Commander and had served on the White Hall City Council. David was a member of the White Hall Pentecostal Church. More than anything, David enjoyed spending time with his family.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at White Hall Pentecostal Church in White Hall, with burial at Belltown Cemetery. The family met with friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 13, at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to the White Hall Pentecostal Church or Belltown Cemetery.
