The Brussels Community Unit School District 42 Board of Education held their monthly meeting last Tuesday evening, March 21, where they discussed district gym use guidelines.
According to the board, the district has been receiving requests to use the gym and have drafted a waiver for those who wish to use the facility. This would allow athletes to train in the off-season, people in the community to shoot hoops, etc.
According to Superintendent Mark Martin, the district’s attorney reviewed the waiver document, as did the district insurance provider and both said it would cover the district.
The district would give key cards that are numbered to those who reserve the gym and the cards can be turned on and off by the district. There would be adult supervision required (someone over 18-years of age). Other requirements would be to clean up any trash, to wear gym shoes, and that all gym policies and procedures are to be upheld during use.
Newest Board Member Ken Schleeper, who was interviewed and appointed during the January 2023 board meeting, wished to review the waiver further before any decision was made allowing use of the gym by the public.
It was also noted that there are five people already using the gym for this purpose, but that those parties’ ability to use the gym will be revoked until the board approves the waiver. The board said they hope to have everything ready and clarified by their next meeting.
Also at the meeting, it was announced that there would be a Book Fair/Movie Night to be held on Friday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m.
In other business, the board approved:
■ I.H.S.A. Membership renewal;
■ School District Calendar for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Brussels CUSD 42 Board of Education meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the School Cafeteria in the Elementary School building. They are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, April 18.
