Steve Helfer said they spend a lot of time preparing their barbecue and it doesn’t go unnoticed, with guests coming back multiple times a week.
Steve Helfer has brought a menu to Jersey County that’s been said could compete with Texas flavors at Steve’s Old Cabin BBQ, located at 29150 Cabin Lane.
With repeat costumers and frequently selling out of food, Helfer said they’re cooking what you would find at a family barbecue.
“We’re a family run operation, we cook food that we like, that we would have at a backyard barbecue,” he said. “Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, pork steaks, comfort foods that everybody seems to enjoy.”
Prepping the food and slow cooking overnight makes for a long process, but Helfer said people notice.
“It keeps ‘em coming back. We have a lot of people that sometimes come twice a week,” Helfer said. “When you talk about brisket everybody talks about Texas brisket, and I’ve had a lot of people tell me ours is as good as any they’ve had any where.”
In addition to the comfort food, the Helfer’s have tried to keep a comfortable family atmosphere in the restaurant by opting out of seeking a liquor license or slot machines to focus on the food and families.
“A lot of places you go to any more have TVs all over, a lot of places have slots now, we try avoid all of that,” he said. “We want families to feel comfortable coming here, being able to sit down with their kids or grandparents or whoever and enjoy each others company.”
Open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Steve’s Old Cabin BBQ’s menu can be found on their Facebook page.
