The Winchester School Board met for their May meeting and performed a number of housekeeping duties.
Steve Moore was elected president, Trista Freeman, vice president; and Shanna Eddinnger, secretary, continued with the meeting schedule, the second Tuesday of the month. Additionally, they will continue using all three banks for district funds, will continue using Miller, Hall and Triggs as legal counsel and re-appointed Angie Slagle as treasurer.
Also approved was the student handbook changes for fiscal year 2024. The new handbook restricted leggings for girls unless the shirt or top came down past the hips. Board member Molly Traw voted against the change.
The board also voted to partner with the Booster Club and the Summer League programs to provide the same updates to the girls softball field, as was done to the boys baseball field last year.
“We are going to replace the fence, install new bleachers, scoreboard,” Kevin Blankenship, superintendent of the district, said. “The bleachers are about 30 years old and the new bleachers are guaranteed for 30 years. That must be the lifetime expectancy of bleachers.”
Trust Freeman voted no on the improvements.
“I think she is concerned that our high school is 100 years old and we should be saving our money to replace it,” Blankenship said.
After a 15 minute closed session the board approved the following personnel matters:
Accepted the retirement of Kim Gourley as bus driver; accepted resignation of Bryan Barnett as ag teacher; accepted the resignation of Kendra Bass as Winchester Grade School girls basket ball coach; and employed Andrew Cqivilare as Winchester High School English and social studies teacher.
