Another PHS Class of 1973 Class Luncheon was held on Thursday, May 25, at the Riverbank in Florence. A good group of 20 attended, and they were: Janet and Greg McKee; Tina Waters; Joe Womble and Mary Breden; Gary and Sharon Williams; Cathy Bollegar and Mark Guthrie; Dennis Wade; Andy Borrowman; Marvin Reel; Steve Cox; Theresa Sidwell; Wyvetta Davis; Cheri Myers; Rod Prentice; Debbie Harshman; Jeanie Hartman; and Theresa Reel. Enjoyed having a good meal and all the visiting. It was decided that the next luncheon would be in August since the one in June is too close to the 4th of July and in July is our 50th Class Reunion.
Cheri and JoAnn’s Latest Trip. Cheri Myers of New Salem and her sister JoAnn Booth of Pittsfield recently had the opportunity to enjoy a cruise to Hawaii. Following is Cheri’s summary of their trip: “The ship left from Vancouver, British Columbia, and five days later we arrived at Nawiliwili on the island of Kauai-The Garden Island. Here we loaded a tour bus for a very scenic drive. We stopped at the Spouting Horn. This area of Kauai is known for its crashing waves which erode lava rocks on the coastline creating narrow openings. With every wave, water shoots upward when it is forced through an opening and creates a sound suggestive of hissing.
“The spray can shoot as high as 50 feet in the air. We started noticing that there are feral chickens all over the place. This is due to there being no natural predators of the islands. The eight acre National Tropical Botanical Garden we visited was so beautiful and educational as we learned about the exotic trees and their many uses in Hawaiian history. Flowers such as orchids grow there. We walked through a cow pasture to see a waterfall. Next was Allerton Gardens and I was surprised to find out it is the same Robert Allerton who built the gardens in Monticello, that was donated to the U of I. Here we saw the Moreton Bay fig trees that were featured in the movie Jurassic Park as well as filming locations for many other movies. Tropical plantings like bamboo, snake plants, and other plants that we consider house plants were growing everywhere. The garden also has many water features and statues. “More of Cheri’s summary will be in next week’s column.
