Not much news this week since I just wrote my column on Monday. Everyone is busy preparing for Memorial Day Services at St. Joseph’s Church in Meppen. Members of the Brussels American Legion assisted by the Brussels Girl Scouts have put flags on the graves of all our deceased veterans. A very solemn weekend in honor of those who gave their lives for our freedom.
Kindergarten graduation was held on Monday night, May 22, at the Brussels Gymnasium. The Class of 2023 included Charlotte Gilbreth, Carl Kirn, Layla Lake-Wiseman, Philip Long, Tatum McCluggage and Aleesa Ray. Denise Rose, Kindergarten teacher presented awards during the ceremony and she and Superintendent Dr. Mark Martin gave them their diplomas.
Eighth grade graduation of St. Mary’s School in Brussels was held on May 11. The three girls graduating were Peyton Baalman, daughter of Wayne and Coleen Baalman; Camryn Klaas, daughter of Brett and Jennifer Klaas; and Alexandria Friedel, daughter of Neal and Charlene Friedel. Best Wishes to them as they enter high school this fall.
Brussels High School graduation is next. To the BCHS Class of 2023 best wishes for all your future plans. Graduates are Mary Baalman, Alyssa Bonner, Hannah Carey, Gaybrielle Henry, Nicholas Kiel, Tyler Kinder, Morgan Klaas, Haylee Krebs, (Twins) Jake and Jerica LaMarsh, Eric Robeen, Chloe Schneider, Dresden Schulte and Emma Vogel.
Next weekend, June 3, is the “Art in the Park” in Brussels, from noon to 4 p.m. This event serves to highlight the South Calhoun Library and promote community involvement by showing off the skills of the many artisans around us. Many vendors will be displaying their handmade items or crafts. Attendees have the chance to purchase items or simply appreciate the talents and skills each vendor offers. Food will also be available for sale. Last week I mentioned quilts would be on display and for sale by the area churches. Sorry I omitted St. Barbara’s Altar Society from Batchtown, also present will be St. Mary’s of Brussels, St. Joseph’s of Meppen and St. Matthew’s also of Brussels, along with dozens of other vendors.
Our community was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of George Lesseg of Brussels that passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 98 and on Thursday morning the loss of Clinton Osborne of Golden Eagle, age 99. Both were WWII veterans. Deepest sympathy to their families.
Members of the Brussels American Legion, sons of the American Legion, assisted by the Brussels Girl Scouts, put flags on the graves of veterans on the area cemeteries. We thank them for the wonderful job they do in honoring our loved ones. I hope you didn’t say “Happy Memorial Day!” The reason for this holiday is anything but happy!
Birthday Blessings to Fred Kuhn, Kevin Nolte, Dana Martin, Kelly Roth, Cindy Jenkins, Karla Ellis, Jerry Zahrli, Jeanette Held, Jessica Droege, David Titus, Hope Wilschetz, Joseph Brangenberg, Emma Hoemmen, Catherine Kamp, Jack Hagen, Corree Snyders and all others celebrating their natal day this week.
Happy Anniversary to Michael and Jordan Hoemmen, Kyle and Kris Hagen and all other couples celebrating a wedding anniversary at this time.

Graduation Prayer
Gracious and caring God, our source of light, we ask for Your almighty hand to be upon these graduates as we send them forward. With their classes and grading now complete, may they strive toward excellence in all they do. Bless them as they go forward with knowledge gained, friendships made and the dreams and visions that they carry in their hearts. We ask all this in the glorious name of Jesus. Amen
