Wilbert Sackman of Jerseyville recently received the Atomic Veterans Service Medal, more than seventy years after witnessing the largest, to that date, hydrogen bomb ever exploded.
Sackman was serving in the U.S. Navy on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Rendova during Operation IVY at Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands on Oct. 31, 1952 and was exposed to radiation, thus qualifying him to be termed an Atomic Veteran.
Atomic Veterans celebrate July 16 as their official date.
