When asked what he was doing, Robert Jones answered, “fair board member stuff.” According to Joe Collard, board president, Jones and other fair board members have gone above and beyond to make sure this year’s fair offers a pleasurable experience. The fair started last night and continues through Saturday night.
The Pike County Fair opened for the 2023 season last night with one afternoon event and three evening events.
The Jackpot market lamb and ewe show was held at 1 p.m.
“We are really happy to have livestock back at the fair,” Joe Collard, president of the fair board, said. “The organizers have worked really hard to get all new pens and gates, got the barns cleaned up and replaced; boards that needed replaced. It looks really nice.”
Collard said the entire fairground had received a make-over with some much needed repairs and re-sprucing around the area.
“I’m really proud of the fair board members and volunteers who have worked so hard getting ready for the fair,” Collard said.
The fair started Tuesday with a jackpot market land and ewe show, a beef show, a queen contest and a speed house show.
Wednesday, the day kicks off with a sheep show at 1 p.m. In the evening, those in the grandstand will be treated to a show pull by the IFPA and Heartland garden tractor pull.
“One will pull on the north end of the track and the other on the south end,” Collard said.
Thursday, June 8, an ITPA truck and tractor pull will start at 6 p.m.
“Hometown favorite Bobby Jones will pull,” Collard said. “We’re hoping he can show his hometown his stuff.”
Friday is the Full Throttle Monster Truck Show, complete with an appearance by Big Foot and other popular trucks on the circuit.
Saturday is full day of activities.
At 10 a.m., the baby contest kicks off, followed by the Little Mr and Miss at 11.
Domination Motor Sports Southern Memorial #9 will start at 6:30 p.m.
Throughout the fair there will be a DinoRoar, for those who love dinosaurs, both young and old.
“Don’t be surprised to see a dinosaur roaming around the fairgrounds,” Collard said. “There will also be the Full Moon Petting Zoo.
More information about special events, season passes and admission fees can be found on the Pike County Illinois Fair Facebook page or their website.
“We’ve tried to give people more for their money this year, than they have got in the past,” Collard said. “We think this will be the best in five years.”
Due to the busy schedule of the girls it was impossible to schedule a pre-pageant picture. Complete coverage of the queen pageant will be in next week’s Pike Press.
