Participants in the Winchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s registered for the event prior to the walk on Saturday morning. According to organizers, nearly 100 individuals participated in the event, and the Walk raised more than $3,000 for Alzheimer’s awareness, research and care.
The Winchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s was Saturday, September 14th at the Town Square. Set up for the event, including organizing Mums that had been purchased towards donating for the cause, was done by local 4-H members and their parents. Those volunteers also manned the registration table, where participants could start signing up for the walk at 8:30. “Folks started arriving a little before 8:30,” said Pam Hembrough, who organized the walk.
Walkers then made groups and walked multiple laps around the Square, with some walking for almost an hour, she said. Participants came from Pike, Morgan and Scott Counties, according to Hembrough and those who bought flowers were from all over the area as well. “114 Mums or Asters were sold and buyers who were from Central Illinois picked them up,” she said.
Nearly 100 people attended the event and through donations, raffles and flower sales over $3,000 was raised. All of that money will be donated to the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for education, training, research and help finance the 24/7 Alzheimer’s Helpline at 1-800-272-3900.
Hembrough wished to thank the City of Winchester for permission to host the event on the Town Square and the Scott County Commissioner and Clerk for expediting her raffle license. “I owe a huge thank you to my helpers and all the participants,” she said. “And a tremendous thank you to all who supported this cause with donations,” she said. The next Winchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s is scheduled for the second Saturday of September 2025.
An Alzheimer’s Support Group meets this Saturday, September 21st at 9 a.m. at the Winchester United Methodist Church. It’s free and open to all dementia caregivers in the surrounding area and is confidential. Sessions begin with DVD presentations on caregiving. Contact Pam Hembrough at 217-473-6427 for more information. The group meets year round on every third Saturday of the month.
