Gage Rice won First Place in Most Original as a Yankees baseball card.
Halloween characters of all ages, including pets, descended on Muntman Park in Bluffs on last Tuesday, October 29th. Just before sunset, dozens of costumed characters, including babies, toddler, teens and adults gathered to prepare. After registering, participants lined up and took the small jaunt around the bank adjacent to the park to display those costumes. Some walked, rode in strollers and even wagons to the delight of an audience that had gathered to cheer them on.
Kids and animals alike donned their costumes for the duration of the event, which included an awards ceremony for categories like Most Original. From dragons to walking baseball cards and toddlers dressed as chickens and fairies and even a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, the participants received their awards before crossing over to the public library to make bookmarks and get refreshments.

An award was given to commemorate one the original organizers of the event, Rita Brockway, whose absence eventually brought the annual celebration to a halt. Her good friend and the co-creator of the event Ellen Graves and her daughter Molly Brockhouse revived the event this year.
Rita’s family, including her husband and daughters were at the event, Brockhouse said. “Hugs and tears were shed, but it was a great moment.”
She and the other organizers of the event were surprised by the big turnout and were grateful for the mild weather. One of her fondest experiences of the night was seeing how joyful children were. “They were dancing to the music and having a great time-no one fought or cried, which was a big win,” she joked.
Looking forward to next year’s Costume Walk, Brockhouse said this year was a learning experience. There has been an abundance of people volunteering already. “I’d like to thank all the donors and volunteers,” she said. “It takes a team of people to make things like this happen and we had the best team.”
