Dozens of local farmers turned out for the annual field day at the Orr Agricultural Center outside Perry last Wednesday.
The event – according to University of Illinois Research Specialist Luke Merritt, who manages the agronomic activities at the Orr Agricultural Center – is designed to share leading edge research conducted the Crop Science Department of the University of Illinois’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (CASES) with area producers.
The field day was an opportunity for local farmers to hear presentations on the newest strategies for agronomic production and pest control directly from University of Illinois researchers. In addition, the local farmers in attendance took a tour of the research center to see the facility’s test plots in action.
“This is our way of giving back to the community,” Merritt said. “This is our way of showing people what we do here and how it can benefit them.”
Due to the heat, the majority of the presentations by the CASES researchers were conducted inside the Fred L. Bradshaw Learning Center’s community room, however attendees did take a tour of the test plots as well.
