It only comes around every three years, but the three days of the Greenfield Triennial Homecoming bring more people to town than probably all the rest of the year.
This year’s 37th Triennial Homecoming is set to take place the weekend of Aug. 7-9. The theme this year is honoring the 100th anniversary of the Greenfield High School.
The school was built in 1924, but the first class to go through and graduate was in the fall of 1925.
The celebration begins on Thursday, Aug. 7 with the parade. Parade lineup starts at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Greenfield High School Gym and the parade is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
“We are hoping to have the oldest living graduate in the parade,” Co-Chair Morgan Coffey said. “She is 103 and lives in Carlinville. We are excited to have several parade entries honoring several community members as well.”
The parade marshal will be none other than Ann Goodman.
“She was chosen for her dedication to Greenfield and our community over the years,” Coffey said. “She has written a book on the Greenfield Homecoming and worked in the old Argus building for years. She has also served on the homecoming committee.”
There will be monetary prizes for the best float, ATV/golf cart and tractor. There are also categories for classic cars and bicycles.
The route starts at the gym on Mulberry, turns south on east street, west on pine, across the highway to College St., north on College to the Wrights Blacktop, then south on Main Street in front of the Square.
After the parade, the Jacksonville High School drum line will perform on the bandstand at the Square followed by an auction. After the auction, Hunter Sharp will be playing music on the stage.
Each afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be programs at the Catholic Hall where there will be speakers and entertainment. On Thursday, the speaker will be Mike Evans with entertainment provided by The Gibson Girls.
On Friday, the speaker will be Jeanne Roberts Jordan with entertainment provided by Nicole Brooks. Saturday’s speaker will be Kent Chinowth with entertainment provided by Chinowth and Debbie Chinowth Powell.
Each night there will be vendors serving a variety of delicious foods located around the Square.
Perhaps the biggest event of the Homecoming is always the Miss Greenfield Pageant with lots of pretty girls lining up to represent Greenfield for the next three years at all of the local parades and carnivals and at a variety of other events. Beginning at 7 p.m., by the end of the night a new Miss Greenfield, Jr. Miss Greenfield and Little Miss Greenfield will be crowned.
Saturday events begin with the Tiger Tromp starting at the elementary school at 7 p.m.
Saturday is also Kid’s Day for children between the ages of 2-14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. There will be watermelon and pie eating contests, relay races, inflatables for the kids to play on and a lunch. At 1 p.m. the fire department will be having an open house.
Entertainment for the adults includes axe throwing, bingo and a variety of games – pretty much something for everyone.
Saturday evening the band Miles Station will be playing followed by the raffle drawing. One must be present to win the full amount of the raffle prizes, which are as follows: First prize, $3,000; second prize, $2,000 and third prize, $1,000. If one is now present, they will win half the amount.
Each evening from 6-10:30 p.m. there will be food trucks, inflatables, axe throwing, bull riding, games and bingo. Armbands to play on the inflatables will be $10 each night
