August is here, and that means it’s time to get back into the school routine! One great way to start the day is with breakfast. It gives your body energy and helps you focus. Eating breakfast can improve concentration, test scores, behavior, and even help you stay at a healthy weight.
Tips for a Quick and Healthy Breakfast:
Plan ahead. Think about your schedule for the week. Some mornings may be busier than others. Plan quick options like overnight oats, toast with peanut butter, or fruit to grab and go like yogurt parfaits, smoothies, or bananas!
Balance your meal. Try to include carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy, while protein and fiber help you stay full longer. Try ideas like oatmeal with fruit, eggs and toast, or a smoothie with milk and berries.
Keep it fun. Don’t eat the same thing every day. Mix it up! Try seasonal foods like apples or pumpkin muffins or adding one new or different breakfast once every one or two weeks. Let kids help pick breakfast options to keep them interested and involved.
Breakfast doesn’t have to be stressful. Make a list of favorites and keep easy foods on hand. Especially for those unexpected running late mornings. When choosing packaged items like granola bars, look for ones low in added sugar, high in protein and fiber, and with “whole” grains.
