Haunted experience raises money for James J. Eldred House
The 4th Annual Halloween Ghost Hunt returns to the James J. Eldred House, a landmark steeped in 19th-century charm and chilling lore.
Built in 1861 by James J. Eldred, a prosperous farmer and one of the largest landowners in the region, the limestone house was designed in the Greek Revival style with touches of Italianate elegance. Eldred built the home for his wife and four children, and it quickly became known for its lively social gatherings. But behind the grandeur lay deep sorrow: three of Eldred’s daughters—Alma, Alice, and Eva—died young, casting a long shadow over the family’s legacy.
James and his wife remained in the home until his death in 1911, and over the years, the house passed through various owners before falling into disrepair. Today, thanks to the efforts of the Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association, the Eldred House is being lovingly restored—and its spirits seem to have never left.
Tickets grant attendees to a 2-hour guided ghost hunt, broken into four immersive experiences:
The Parlor – Learn the fascinating history of the Eldred House and the family who built it, including stories of hardship, resilience, and enduring mystery.
The Office – Join Medium Rose Fulhorst for a group session that may connect you with energies from beyond.
The Basement – Get hands-on with ghost-hunting tools alongside the experts from Riverbend Paranormal.
The Nursery – Participate in an EVP session with a seasoned ghost hunter—will the spirits speak?
Premium Extended Stay (10 p.m. Tour) – For the boldest guests, the $45 ticket includes everything above plus extra time after the tour to freely explore the house, use equipment, ask questions, and conduct your own ghost hunt. It’s the closest you’ll get to a solo investigation inside one of Greene County’s most haunted homes.
