Carrollton School District presents balanced budget

Carrollton School Board members, at their Sept. 22 meeting were presented with and passed a balanced budget for next year.
The budget shows the Education Fund should be in the black by $68,719 while the Transportation Fund showed a positive balance of $67,817.
The Operations and Maintenance Fund required a little explanation from Carrollton Superintendent Jason Bauer.
“In that fund, you have to subtract the large debt certificate payment that came in as revenue last year,” he said. “When you compare the remaining revenue to expenses, that fund comes out in the black by $52,093.
There were two funds who were in the red – the Tort Fund at $24,580 and the IMRF/SS Fund at $3,621. Bauer said he wasn’t concerned about the negative balance in these funds.
“Those two funds are not a huge concern due to them being restricted funds,” he said. “Restricted funds mean you can only use them for specific purposes. You can’t use them in the Ed Fund or the Transportation Fund.”
Bauer said, in the end, the balanced budget is the main thing.
“You just have to hope that you get all the money you were supposed to get and you didn’t spend more than you had originally allocated,” he said. “Plus, you have to hope that nothing major comes up you didn’t foresee.”
The district received two rather large donations. The first was a $2,500 donation from the PTO to be used to put a fence around the playground. The second one was for $5,000 from Angela Baumer, in memory of her parents, Tom and Henrietta Shafer. This donation was made to make renovations to the girls’ locker room.
The board approved the review of the required annual website posting of the district. Bauer said there is a list of things that have to be put on the school website. Bauer and District Secretary Gina Settles reviewed all of those requirements to make sure the website was updated with all of the required information.
The board also approved the purchase of a dump trailer from LaCrosse Lumber in the amount of $5,800. Last month Maintenance and Transportation Director Steve Caselton explained that the district needed something to move things like branches and brush to the city dump. However, it will also be used for other things as well.
A couple items were added to the Excess Property list including the old scoreboard that was taken down at the grade school and the old driver’s education car that has been sitting in front of the old band room.
Carrollton high school boys baseball will have a new coach next year after the board approved the hiring of John Goode to the head coach position. Goode was also recently appointed as the new Carrollton Police Chief.
