Applications open for JWCC’s “earn and learn” manufacturing program

John Wood Community College (JWCC) is now accepting applications for its Great River FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) program, a nationally recognized “earn-and-learn” initiative that prepares students for high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing. The application window is open through April 30, 2026.
Launched in partnership with major regional employers—including ADM, DOT Foods, Gardner Denver, General Mills, Knapheide, and Titan International—the program offers students a unique opportunity to gain paid industry experience while earning an Associate in Applied Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.
Participants split their time between the classroom and the production floor: three days a week are spent in hands-on training at JWCC’s Workforce Development Center, while the remaining two days are spent working at a sponsoring company, earning at least $21 per hour.
“This is a transformative opportunity for students who want to build a career with both technical skills and real-world experience,” said Gavin Ideus, JWCC Advanced Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Instructor. “We now have 20 students across two cohorts who are already making an impact in the workforce. The program is helping them launch careers and helping our region meet the growing demand for skilled talent.”
The Great River FAME program emphasizes both technical and professional development. Students receive training in robotics, troubleshooting, and lean manufacturing, while also building soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking—qualities that employers say are essential for long-term success.
Graduates are often hired directly into full-time roles with their sponsoring companies or other local manufacturers, entering the workforce with little to no debt and a competitive wage.
Prospective students can begin the application process by submitting an inquiry form at jwcc.edu/fame. JWCC staff are available to assist with applications, and informational sessions will be held in the coming months. Ideus is also available for one-on-one meetings with students and families, including tours of the Workforce Development Center where FAME classes are held.
“This program is ideal for anyone looking for a hands-on, high-tech career path without the burden of traditional college debt,” Ideus added. “It’s a direct route to a meaningful job and a sustainable future.”
