Matt Coultas, long-time varsity football coach of the West Central Cougars, has handed in his resignation.
The resignation was accepted at a special meeting of the Board of Education Nov. 19.
Coultas said he had coached in the West Central program for 12 years, five as an assistant and seven as varsity coach. His career record is 34-30, close to Walt Rucks record from the1950s.
“We’ve made the play-offs four times and went 5-1 in the spring season that was held during COVID,” Coultas said. “That year we only played six games.”
Coultas said he has been involved with the Cougar football program, junior high, assistant and varsity levels since 1998.
“That is the same year my wife and I got married,” Coultas said. “We’ve never spent a fall together.”
Coultas said time was one of the issues that sparked his decision to retire.
“It takes so much time in the off-season and then the season,” he said. “I guess maybe I’m tired or burnt out, but, I think the boys deserve someone with more time to give.”
Coultas said he will miss the interaction with the boys as well as visiting with other coaches.
“I’ve made some good friends among the area coaches,” he said. “I’ll miss visiting with those guys.”
