St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School in Jerseyville welcomed a guest speaker to explore the connection between Science, Healthcare, and future careers. Dawna Egelhoff, an Alliance Educator for area hospitals, came to Joan Dougherty’s 7-8 grade Science classes to facilitate a Science lesson about real life contexts students would see in healthcare settings.
Students were able to explore the real-world impact of science in healthcare. Ms. Egelhoff discussed how science and healthcare work together to improve lives, advance medical knowledge, and serve our local communities. Her lesson introduced students to a variety of future career paths that combine scientific study with healthcare, including roles in medicine, nursing, medical technology, research, and public health. The lesson was designed to help students understand how the scientific concepts they learn in the classroom connect to real-world applications, while encouraging them to think about how their interests and talents might lead to meaningful careers.
Mrs. Dougherty said , “St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School believes in educating the whole person and helping students see how faith, learning, and service are connected. Presentations like this help our students see how science and healthcare can be used as a way to care for others and make a positive difference in the world.” She emphasized the importance of curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion that are values aligning with the school’s Catholic mission.
In February, the students will be taking a field trip to OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton where they will be able to further explore science and healthcare as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to providing students with engaging, real-world learning experiences that inspire academic growth and vocational awareness.
